Vishnu
Who is Vishnu?
Vishnu is the preserver god, the one who keeps the universe running smoothly. Whenever evil grows too strong and the world falls out of balance, Vishnu comes down to Earth in a new form, called an avatar, to fix things. His two most famous avatars are Rama and Krishna.
Vishnu is usually shown with blue skin, resting on a giant serpent in a cosmic ocean, dreaming the universe into being. Kids love his stories because each avatar is a full adventure: a fish, a tortoise, a dwarf, a lion-man, a prince, and more. Ten avatars, ten epic rescues.
Vishnu’s most famous stories
- Gajendra: The Elephant and the Crocodile: Vishnu rushes to save his devotee Gajendra in one of his most touching rescues.
- Prahlad and Narasimha: Vishnu bursts out of a pillar as the lion-man Narasimha to save the boy Prahlad.

Fun facts about Vishnu
- Vishnu is often shown holding four objects: a conch, a discus, a mace, and a lotus flower.
- His discus, the Sudarshana Chakra, is said to always return to his hand after being thrown, like a boomerang.
- Vishnu’s wife is Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and she appears beside him in every avatar story.
- The tenth avatar, Kalki, has not come yet. The stories say he will arrive in the future on a white horse.
