Chitrakoot: Rama’s Forest Home in Exile

Chitrakoot, on the Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh border, is the forest region where Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana spent their exile.

Chitrakoot is a pilgrimage town on the border of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, along the Mandakini river. In the Ramayana, its forests are where Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana made their home during exile.

What the story says

After leaving Ayodhya, Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana settled in the forests of Chitrakuta, living simply among the hermits and sages who already meditated there.

When Bharata learned what had happened, he rushed to Chitrakoot with the whole royal family to beg Rama to come back and take the throne. Rama refused, saying a promise is a promise.

Instead, Bharata took Rama’s sandals back to Ayodhya and ruled in his brother’s name. The spot where the brothers met is still marked by the Bharat Milap temple.

What we actually know

The ancient Chitrakuta is identified with the modern Chitrakoot region, which is divided between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The epic connects it with Bharata’s visit, with Rama performing the last rites of his father Dasharatha, and with sages like Atri and Agastya who are said to have meditated in these forests.

Today Chitrakoot is a busy pilgrimage center with temples, ghats, and forest trails tied to the story, including Ram Ghat on the Mandakini and the Bharat Milap temple.
