Seeing the new Ramayana movie? Start here. Neev and his mom race through the whole Ramayana in about 12 minutes, with no movie spoilers.

Prince Rama breaks Shiva's mighty bow and marries Sita. Queen Kaikeyi's two wishes send him into the forest for fourteen years, and his brother Bharata rules with Rama's sandals on the throne. Along the way, find out how Ravana got his ten heads and why Shiva once trapped him under Mount Kailash.

Transcript of the episode audio. Speaker labels: Neev and his co-host.

Neev: Welcome to a bonus episode of Mythical Masala. I’m Neev.

Co-host: And I am the person who has watched the Ramayan movie trailer 11 times.

Neev: 12. I counted.

Co-host: Fine, 12.

Neev: The new Ramayan movie comes out November 5th, 2026. So, before you grab your popcorn, we’re telling you the whole Ramayan, so you can enjoy it even more. Start to finish, super fast. How fast? Faster than Hanuman crossing the ocean.

Co-host: So one jump?

Neev: Basically. No movie spoilers, just the original story.

Co-host: And hey, we’re not affiliated with the movie itself, and they’re not sponsoring this episode or our podcast. Though I wish they would. So seat belts on, we are going to Ayodhya.

Neev: Long ago in the kingdom of Ayodhya, King Dasharatha had three queens and four sons: Ram, Bharat, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna.

Co-host: Four princes in one palace. I don’t even want to think about the laundry.

Neev: Really? That’s the first thing that comes to your mind? Anyway, Ram was the eldest, brave, kind, and everyone’s favorite, and Lakshmana followed him everywhere.

Co-host: A little brother who actually likes hanging out with you. Very rare.

Neev: Very. When Ram was still a teenager, the sage Vishwamitra showed up at the palace. Demons kept ruining the sacred fire rituals in his forest, and he wanted Ram to stop them.

Co-host: Imagine a teacher knocking at your door: “I need your son for demon duty.”

Neev: The king was scared, but he let Ram and Lakshmana go. Ram defeated the demoness Tataka. And when a demon named Mareecha attacked the fire, Rama’s arrow knocked him all the way into the ocean.

Co-host: Remember Mareecha? He holds a grudge.

Neev: Then Vishwamitra took the brothers to Mithila, the kingdom of King Janak.

Co-host: So King Janaka had a daughter, Sita. He found her as a baby in the earth while he was plowing a field. Her name actually means furrow, the line a plow cuts into the soil.

Neev: Janak also had a bow that belonged to Lord Shiva. It was so heavy that thousands of men had to haul it in on a giant cart. Whoever could string it would marry Sita.

Co-host: The world’s hardest gym test.

Neev: Kings tried. Kings failed. Then Ram lifted it like it was nothing, bent it, pulled the string, and the bow snapped in two.

Co-host: Passed the test, broke the equipment.

Neev: And Ram and Sita were married. Years later, King Dasharatha decided to crown Ram. The whole city was decorated. Everyone was celebrating.

Co-host: Except one person.

Neev: Queen Kaikeyi, Bharat’s mother. Her maid Manthara kept whispering to her: Co-host (as Manthara): “If Ram becomes king, your son gets nothing.”

Co-host: Manthara, the original group chat drama.

Neev: Long ago, Kaikeyi had saved Dasharatha’s life in a battle, and he had promised her two wishes, two boons. That night, she used both. Co-host (as Kaikeyi): “Crown my son Bharata as king, and send Ram to the forest for 14 years.”

Co-host: 14 years, that’s longer than Neev has been alive on this world.

Neev: Thanks for the reminder. The king was heartbroken, but he had given his word. And when Ram heard, he didn’t argue. He just said yes.

Co-host: This is the part kids always ask about. Why not fight it? For Ram, keeping his father’s promise was dharma. Doing what’s right, even when it costs you a crown.

Neev: Sita refused to stay behind. Lakshmana refused, too. So the three of them walked out of Ayodhya in simple forest clothes, and the whole city cried.

Co-host: And the king didn’t survive it.

Neev: No. Dasharatha died of grief soon after. Then Bharata came home, found out what his mother had done, and he was furious.

Co-host: Plot twist, the son she did all this for didn’t want any of it.

Neev: Bharata walked all the way to the forest and begged Rama to come back. Rama said no. A promise is a promise. So Bharata asked for Rama’s sandals, carried them home on his head, and placed them on the throne.

Co-host: He ruled for 14 years in the name of a pair of sandals. Best placeholder in history.

Neev: For years, Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana lived in the forest. Then they built a little hut at Panchavati near the Godavari River, and that’s where trouble walked in.

Co-host: Literally walked in?

Neev: Literally. Shurpanakha, Ravana’s sister. She wanted to marry Rama. He said he was already married. She tried Lakshmana. He said no, too. So she lunged at Sita.

Co-host: Bold strategy.

Neev: Lakshmana stopped her and cut off her nose. She ran, furious, all the way to her brother, Ravana, the ten-headed king of Lanka.

Co-host: Okay. The ten heads: he was actually born with them. His birth name was Dashagriva, which means “ten necks.” And when he prayed to Lord Brahma for thousands of years, he offered his heads into the fire one at a time, nine of them, until Brahma appeared to give them all back with a boon.

Neev: Which is pretty extreme. Before he was a villain, Ravan was brilliant: a great scholar, a musician, and one of Lord Shiv’s biggest devotees. He even tried to lift Shiv’s own mountain, Kailash, just to show how strong he was. Shiva pressed it down with one toe and trapped his arms underneath.

Co-host: He sang Shiva’s praises until Shiv finally let him go.

Neev: Super talented, super powerful, and very used to getting whatever he wanted. So when he heard about Sita, he made a plan, and he called in an old friend.

Co-host: Let me guess, the ocean guy?

Neev: Mareecha. He turned himself into a golden deer with silver spots and pranced right past the hut.

Co-host: Sparkly, suspicious, classic trap.

Neev: Sita asked Rama to catch it. Rama chased it deep into the forest. When his arrow finally hit, Mareecha cried out in Ram’s voice: “Ha Lakshman! Ha Sita!” The deer did the voice acting. Sita was terrified and begged Lakshmana to go help. He didn’t want to leave her. In the end, he went.

Co-host: Lakshman draws a line around the hut that no one is allowed to cross, the Lakshman Rekha.

Neev: The moment Sita was alone, a holy man came to the door asking for food. It was Ravana in disguise. He grabbed Sita, threw her into his flying chariot, and rose into the sky. But someone saw. Jatayu, a giant old vulture and an old friend of Ram’s father. Jatayu flew straight at Ravan. He smashed the chariot and fought with everything he had. But Ravan drew his sword, cut off his wings, and Jatayu fell.

Co-host: He knew he couldn’t win, but he tried anyway.

Neev: When Ram and Lakshman found him, Jatayu used his last breath to tell them who had taken Sita and which way they went. South. Ram and Lakshman searched everywhere. In the hills of Kishkindha, they met the monkey king Sugriv and his best friend, Hanuman.

Co-host: The MVP of the Ramayana. Uh, sorry, Ram.

Neev: He’d agree. Ram helped Sugriv win back his kingdom, and Sugriv sent search parties in every direction. Hanuman’s team went south, all the way to the ocean.

Co-host: And there they met Sampati, Jatayu’s older brother. He could see for miles, and he told them Sita was across the sea, on the island of Lanka.

Neev: So Hanuman climbed a mountain, grew enormous, and leaped.

Co-host: A hundred yojanas, that’s hundreds of miles. One jump, no snacks.

Neev: In Lanka, he shrank to the size of a cat and searched the whole city. Finally, he found Sita in the Ashoka garden, surrounded by guards. He gave her Rama’s ring so she’d know he was a friend.

Co-host: Proof of identity, ancient edition.

Neev: Then Hanuman let himself get caught, just so he could meet Ravan face to face. Ravan ordered his tail set on fire.

Co-host: Big mistake. Huge.

Neev: Hanuman made his tail longer and longer, broke free, and jumped from rooftop to rooftop until half of Lanka was burning. Then he dunked his tail in the ocean and leapt home. Ram’s army of vanaras marched to the edge of the sea. There was just one problem.

Co-host: No boats.

Neev: No boats. And that’s when Ravan’s own brother, Vibhishan, crossed over to Ram’s side. He had told Ravan to return Sita, and Ravan threw him out.

Co-host: Even his brother knew he was wrong.

Neev: Then the vanaras built a bridge. The builder was Nala, and the whole army carried rocks and trees into the sea.

Co-host: And in the popular telling, the stones floated because Ram’s name was written on them. The bridge is called Ram Setu. You can still see a line of shoals between India and Sri Lanka on the satellite map.

Neev: Then came the war. Ravan’s giant brother, Kumbhakarna, who slept for months at a time. Ravan’s son Indrajit, who could fight hidden in the clouds. Lakshmana was struck down so badly he almost died, and Hanuman flew all the way to the Himalayas for a healing herb.

Co-host: And he couldn’t tell which plant was the right one, so he brought back the whole mountain.

Neev: When in doubt, bring everything. Finally, Ram and Ravan faced each other. Ram cut off Ravan’s heads, and they grew right back. Again and again.

Co-host: That’s the boon from Brahma coming back to bite.

Neev: So Ram picked up the Brahmastra, the weapon of Brahma himself, and aimed it at Ravan’s heart, and the ten-headed king fell.

Co-host: That victory is what Dussehra celebrates. All over India, giant Ravan effigies go up in flames.

Neev: Ram and Sita were together again, and they flew home to Ayodhya in the Pushpak.

Co-host: It was the darkest night of the month, no moon at all, so the people lined every street and rooftop with little clay lamps to light their way home.

Neev: The first Diwali. And that’s the Ramayana,

Co-host: in about 10 minutes. Hanuman would be proud.

Neev: Want Ravana’s whole backstory before you go? Listen to Season 1, Episode 13, Ravana’s Rise. And the first 10 stories on our Ramayan page take you right up to Sita’s abduction. It’s all at mythicalmasalapodcast.com.

Co-host: And you should definitely go watch the movie, because it’s going to be a visual spectacle. Because, hey, this podcast is only audio.

Neev: Thanks for listening to Mythical Masala. Enjoy the movie, and we’ll see you next time.
