Frequently asked questions

What is an avatar of Vishnu?

An avatar is a form that Lord Vishnu takes to come down to earth in times of crisis. Whenever evil grows too powerful and the world is in danger, Vishnu arrives in a surprising new shape, sometimes as a king or hero, sometimes as an animal, to set things right.

Who was the boy who would not back down?

That is Prahlada, a young prince who refused to stop worshipping Vishnu even though his tyrant father forbade it. No punishment could shake his faith, and when his father tried to kill him, Vishnu burst forth as the man-lion Narasimha to save him.

What was the churning of the ocean?

The Samudra Manthan was the great churning of the cosmic ocean by gods and demons working together to win amrita, the nectar of immortality. Vishnu took the form of Kurma, a giant tortoise, and held Mount Mandara steady on his back while it served as the churning rod.

Who was the elephant crying out from the lake?

That is Gajendra, the mighty elephant king who was dragged underwater by a crocodile and cried out to Vishnu in despair. Moved by his devotion, Vishnu rushed to the lake and freed him, a story known as Gajendra Moksha, the liberation of the elephant.

Why does Vishnu keep taking new forms?

Vishnu takes a new form whenever dharma, or righteousness, is in danger and evil seems unstoppable. Each avatar is perfectly shaped for its crisis: a tortoise to hold a mountain, a man-lion to defeat a tyrant no man or beast could kill. The need decides the form.

Sudarshan Chakra: How Vishnu Got His Spinning Disc and Why Durvasa Ran

Where did Vishnu's spinning disc, the Sudarshan Chakra, come from? It starts with a thousand lotus flowers, a test from Shiva, and one flower that goes missing. Then the chakra goes to work, guarding King Ambarisha, a kind king keeping his Ekadashi fast. When the hot-tempered sage Durvasa turns up late for lunch and loses his temper over a single sip o...
