Teaching Diwali: Lesson Plans and Classroom Activities for Kids

A one-week Diwali unit for ages 6 to 12: the story behind the festival, discussion questions, hands-on activities, and a free Diwali printable pack.

Diwali is the most widely celebrated festival in India, and its best-known story is Rama’s return to Ayodhya. This guide gives teachers and parents everything for a one-week Diwali unit: the story, the meaning, discussion questions, and hands-on activities for ages 6 to 12.

Learning objectives

  • Retell why Diwali is celebrated: Rama’s victory and homecoming.
  • Explain the festival’s symbols: diyas, fireworks, sweets, and new beginnings.
  • Describe how Diwali is celebrated differently across India.
  • Connect the theme of light over darkness to their own lives.

Episodes and stories to use

  1. Ravana’s End: Lakshmana’s Miracle, and Rama’s Ultimate Victory – the victory that Diwali celebrates.
  2. Ramayana: Farewell of Rama – the homecoming and what came after.
  3. Why Do We Celebrate Diwali? The Story of Diwali for Kids – the full festival guide: five days, regional traditions, and how families celebrate.
  4. Krishna’s Miraculous Birth and Babyhood Adventures – for the Krishna stories many families tell at Diwali.

Discussion questions

  1. Why do you think people celebrate a victory that happened so long ago? What does it mean to them today?
  2. Diwali is called the festival of lights. What does light stand for in the story? Can you think of a “darkness” in your own life that light could fix?
  3. Different regions celebrate Diwali differently. Why do you think one festival has so many versions?
  4. The people of Ayodhya lit diyas to guide Rama home. How do we welcome people home today?
  5. What is one new beginning you would like to make this year, the way Diwali marks new beginnings?

Classroom activities

  • Diya decorating. Decorate clay or paper diyas while listening to the Ravana’s End episode. Discuss what each child would light their diya for.
  • Five days of Diwali. Assign each group one of the five days (Dhanteras, Choti Diwali, Diwali, Govardhan Puja, Bhai Dooj) to research and present in two minutes.
  • Story sequencing cards. Print or draw six scenes from Rama’s story and have students order them, then retell the story to a partner.
  • Light-over-darkness wall. Each student writes one fear or worry on a dark paper strip, then covers it with a bright “light” strip naming something hopeful. Display as a class collage.
